I was born and raised just outside of Sidney, Nebraska, where my family lived on 5 ½ acres. My driving lessons began at age 10, when my father trained me to drive the perimeter of the property in a 1969 International Harvester Metro stepvan. The floor-mounted gearshift was nearly as tall as I was! That remained my primary transportation after I began driving on public highways at age 15, going the 2 miles into town and then 2 miles back almost every day for Mass, to run errands, and to shuttle around my little brothers and sister to various activities and friends’ houses. When I was 18, I took my first epic road trip, and drove a 5 speed manual Ford Ranger pickup from Sidney to Alaska, all around that State, and back, putting more than 8,000 miles on the odometer in 6 weeks, and travelling every mile of the Alaska Highway. I have crossed the country by car many times since, and have now driven on the roads of 49 States (haven’t made it to Hawaii yet) and 6 Canadian Provinces and Territories. Some of my favorite drives have been over Donner Pass, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. I moved to Post Falls in 2022, where I am a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. After hearing from several people at church about how long the wait times were for driver’s ed, I decided to become a licensed driving instructor.
